Megan and Brett’s Cedarwood Outdoor Cathedral summer wedding is jaw-dropping gorgeous, and the celebration following is just as amazing. The bride is a graduate of the O’More College of Design in Franklin, Tennessee, and used her talents to create a personal celebration that expressed Megan’s penchant for unique style. The entire event was a wonderful collaboration between Megan and the Cedarwood floral, design and event team and included a double dose of help from Megan’s amazing parents, Suzy and Richard Powell. Relaxed, rustic elements like vintage blue mason jars juxtaposed with custom linens, mercury glass and bejeweled votive holders created a country feel with designer flair.
Naturally every Cedarwood designated A List wedding must have amazing photography to back it up! Megan’s DIY elements are abundant throughout the reception, so scroll on down for stunning images from the talented Leslee Mitchell PLUS a list of some of our favorite details and Megan’s own story of her wedding planning and design.
Photos of Megan and Bret in the vintage glider, a bicycle for two, and the Cedarwood barn are among our favorite wedding day portraits. Leslee even managed to catch a shot of bird houses by the property’s vintage Airstream — a decor theme established with Megan’s bird house ‘churches’ that adorned the program table and stone wall.
Instead of a traditional guest book, Megan had friends take Polaroid photos of arriving guests and invited them to leave comments in a wedding photo album. Framed family photos carried out the photo welcome theme, and even included a framed original of Megan’s great grand parents’ German marriage certificate – from 1904!
We know you must now be asking, “How did Megan come up with such amazing design and details?” Here’s her story!
“When Brett and I started to plan our wedding and look for venues it was important to us to find a place that was unique and had a comfortable atmosphere, I had been to too many weddings where it felt like a corporate banquet or meeting rather than a wedding. That’s when I found Cedarwood. This venue was everything and more when it came to my dream wedding. Being the creative person that I am, when I read they had specific packages I was worried I would not be able to add the personal design touches I had always dreamed of. However, I didn’t have to worry about that; after meeting with Linda and Karen and seeing how they embraced every idea I came up with, I knew I found my dream venue.
“Brett and I love history, vintage touches, family, sweet treats, and most of all, having fun. Our favorite color is turquoise blue, and I have always loved the chic look of mustard yellow and dove grey. With that I knew I had my color palette. I then tried to think of ways to add personal touches that would express not only who we are, but would also be fun for our guests. When coming up with design concepts I kept using the same words: Intimate, Personal, Sacred, Unique, Chic, Vintage, and Romantic and Fun.
My first thought was our guestbook. Brett and I are visual people so instead of a book of names, we wanted a book of pictures. That’s when I asked my good friend Bethany Gant who has done photography as a hobby for years if she would take pictures of each guest as they arrive. The guests could hold a message for us if they chose, which added to the personal feeling we were going for.
“With the ceremony, we wanted it to be an intimate, joyous occasion and that every guest was not there merely to act as a witness but that they were also involved. This is when we decided to have Holy Communion incorporated into our service. Brett and I had the rare privilege to serve each one of our closest family members and friends such a sacred meal. It is a moment I personally will never forget. Also I wanted a special way to remember those loved ones who had passed on, which I chose to do with writing each of their names on a dove cutout I made and hung them from the floral arrangements in each of the windows.
Next was the table numbers and escort cards, I have always loved skeleton keys so I came up with the idea to have a key for every guest with their name on it. They then took this to their table. When I designed the table number I was sure to add a keyhole to it. This is where I came up with ‘The Key to Your Seat’.
“The table linens were also a challenge. Having a vision already in my mind, I could not find a linen pattern I was satisfied with. Brett and I were doing some shopping when we wandered into a fabric store and that’s when I found the fabrics we used for the wedding. Lucky for me, my parents were willing to hand craft every table overlay, every napkin, and also add fabric pieces to the different tables placed throughout the grounds. They are truly incredible people.
“For the grand finale, my dad makes the absolute most amazing homemade peanut brittle, which he usually makes for close friends during the Christmas holidays. Knowing what a hit it is every year, I asked if he would make some to hand out as favors to each of our guests at the wedding. We packaged the sweet confection in individual mason jars and added the material used for the linens with a turquoise ribbon as a special touch. Along with the peanut brittle we served individual packages of cotton candy (another favorite of mine and Brett’s). Each treat had a label from Brett and me wishing every guest “Sweet Dreams” as they journeyed home.”
